365 Party Girl Summer
Niche legend Charli XCX and you
Dear reader,
I can finally take as many deep breaths as I want (bronchitis is slain) and just in time for party girl summer. Don’t close this tab, people who don’t identify as party girls! This summer theme has something for everyone.
On Friday, one of my top pop stars Charli XCX (her MSN Messenger name from the early 2000s, abbreviated for Kiss Charli Kiss - WHAT IF my pop star name was Sunsoup9? Sunshine and soup in your headphones!). Charli is a character. She has the bravado perhaps more suitable for a star with the impact of Beyoncé, but her music can be as niche as some car sounds and a throbbing house beat. She rose to prominence featuring on huge pop hits like “I Love It” and “Fancy” and has been crafting a truly singular voice for a decade.
Her new record Brat speaks to me, as a girl who loves to be in a crowd, dancing my face off, and a girl who also isn’t afraid to cry in therapy. The record is all about partying, feeling disconnected from your peers, love, grief, not being sure you will have a family, dancing, and of course drugs - themes that ricochet like pinballs around the short little summer record.
As chaotic as her career and persona are, Charli XCX is my muse this summer. It’s a 365 party girl summer, and it’s not what you think. As I once told my friend (joking, not joking), drugs are as unwelcome and ‘80s at this party as a fax machine. But all the other elements are in place. This 365 party girl summer holds:

Journaling
Taking stock of our relationships
Celebrating our deep connections
Dancing like everyone is watching
Radiating the over-confidence of a cult leader (Charli once gave Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin a My Little Pony as a good luck talisman, and when he suggested she keep it for her own luck she said, “You guys probably need it a lot more than I do.” We love a backhanded queen!)
